Osmanthus Absolute Forumula
An In - Depth Formula & Guide for the Aspiring Perfumer . Volume X: Osmanthus Absolute Base Osmanthus, often called sweet osmanthus, sweet olive, or fragrant olive, has deep roots in East Asian horticultural and cultural history. It is native to Asia and has been cultivated in China for roughly 2,500 years, where it became far more than a garden plant, it was used to scent tea, wine, sweets, and became so culturally important that Guilin 桂林 (a city in northeastern Guangxi, southern China) literally means “forest of sweet osmanthus.” Historical records also place osmanthus among the celebrated flowers of China, with references to its ornamental and courtly use going back at least to the Han Dynasty. Botanically, it is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the olive family, with modest, often hidden flowers that do not look dramatic but are famous for their unusually powerful fragrance. Osmanthus has one of the most distinctive floral profiles in perfumery, apricot-like, with soft peach and dried fruit nuances, wrapped in a floral velvety heart, honeyed, lightly tea-like, with a wonderful animalic growl from the suede facets and a subtle jammy-plum warmth. In live bloom, many people first notice the apricot effect most strongly, however in perfumery materials, especially with absolutes, that fruity glow is often joined by deeper leathery and osmanthus-tea undertones.
