Apothecary Rose

An ode to Rosa gallica —the apothecary rose. This solid perfume melts into the skin like butter, imbuing flesh with the heavenly scent of three varieties of heirloom roses. Verdant, freshly-cut stems are bolstered by the aromas of sweet tarragon, jammy apricot, and a warm, earthy base. Notes: a bouquet of heirloom roses cut from the garden; green stem accord, dew-pearled petals, wild rosehips and young thorns. Apricot jelly, fresh tarragon, and a bittersweet base of myrrh and labdanum. An herbaceous, jammy rose perfume. The Ritual: Scoop the desired amount of your scented balm of choice and gently warm it between your fingers before applying it to pulse points (wrists, the crook of the elbow, the nape of the neck, the décolleté) or wherever else you please in gentle, circular motions, allowing the perfume to air-dry. Solid perfumes perform best when in contact with heat and do wonderfully on warm summer days, or when applied under the collar of a shirt when the temperature drops. As centuries passed, the flower migrated from Southwestern Asia to Europe where, by the Middle Ages, it was cultivated in the cloistered medicine gardens of medieval monasteries. At the turn of the 19th century, French druggists used r osa gallica as a symbol of their pharmaceutical pursuits, flanking the entrance of their apothecaries with its image — giving r. gallica the common name of 'the apothecary's rose'. Fast-forward to the 21st century, this heirloom rose is still cherished for more than just its beauty, bearing a longstanding historical legacy as a culinary, medicinal, spiritual and olfactory powerhouse ingredient.
